Weekday Preschool Ministry uses the WEE Learn curriculum by Lifeway Publications in all of the classes. It is a Christian, center-based program that includes a Bible story and Bible verses which are integrated into the academic concepts of each unit. Here at the preschool we are dedicated to developing the whole child. Children are exposed to a variety of activities to promote their social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual and physical growth. Children have freedom within a structured framework to explore and learn.
Music meets weekly for all ages. It is an action packed time where children sing, dance, and play musical instruments. Activities are varied depending on the age of the children.
Chapel meets weekly for the three's and Pre-K classes. The Children's Pastor at First Baptist, Kim Eskridge, leads the children in songs, prayer, and Bible stories. During this time the children are shown that God made them and loves them very much. Each week the children receive a story sheet along with a prize that corresponds to the Bible story.
Science class meets weekly for all ages. Children have the opportunity to explore and observe while working as young scientists. Topics of study may include: magnets, solar system, electricity, gravity, seeds, and other topics.
A Typical Day
A typical day for most of the children includes free play, circle time, snack, center activities, outside recess, lunch and closing activities. Activities vary according to class schedules and the age of the children.
In the one-year-old classes, children learn to play with others and follow simple instructions. They are introduced to basic concepts such as colors, shapes, and books. Developing a sense of trust with someone other than a family member is also an emphasis. Children participate in stories, interact with songs, and develop motor skills through painting and coloring. They are introduced to the concept of who Jesus is and that He loves and cares for them. Children enjoy snack and lunch at school and are encouraged to nap at the end of the day. During inclement weather, the children enjoy discovering the indoor soft play room.
In the two-year-old classes, we foster a growing sense of independence while working on fine and gross motor skills. Children learn to follow directions, a routine, and to transition while participating in fun age-appropriate activities. Peer relationships and interactions are encouraged through cooperative play, crafts, music, circle time, and recreation. Language is developed throughout our program as children are exposed to books, activities, and creative play. During inclement weather the children enjoy playing in the indoor soft play room. Children enjoy snack and lunch at school and are encouraged to nap at the end of the day. Most importantly, children learn about God's creation, His love for them, and how special they are to Him.
With their warm and welcoming feel, the Three-year-old classrooms invite children to learn through play. Building, art, dress-up, and home living are a few of the learning-based centers that the children may explore. The teachers plan theme-based activities throughout the month based on the WEE Learn curriculum. Daily activities incorporate a circle time, which includes: stories, calendar, counting, discussing weather, and graphing activities. Children are encouraged to talk through problems and frustrations in a safe environment. Independence is encouraged through daily classroom jobs as well as taking care of personal property. Children and teachers alike enjoy discovering books that are classic childhood favorites as well as more modern books that are rich in moral value. Threes are an age when we are encouraging friendships and kindness towards others through God's teachings.
The Pre-K classes use the welcome and free play time to develop the socialization skills of sharing, taking turns, and making friends. Circle time develops listening skills, group discussions skills, basic phonetic awareness, and letter recognition. Children also learn calendar skills which include counting, number recognition, patterning and graphing skills, and discussing the weather. The children learn to take responsibility for the jobs assigned each day as well as their personal property. Our center and craft time activities help develop concepts and skills for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners and meet each child's needs on a developmentally appropriate level. Playground time develops gross motor skills through exercise, physical activity, and getting along with larger groups of children. Our goal is to develop a well-rounded Christ-centered student with a solid foundation that will prepare each child for successful future academic and spiritual endeavors.
